The truth is not propaganda.
You cannot fight terrorism. For every terrorist (and colateral innocent) killed, their friends and loved-ones become terrorists.
"The struggle against terrorism cannot be won by military means." Robin Cook (article)
I left the following (without links) on the Foreign & Commonwealth Office Feedback Page on the 1st March 2006 after looking for travel advice here:
Does the risk of a terrorist attack on tourists really nessecitate its position at the top of the Tourist Advice page? According to your list of significant terrorist attacks, less than 50 Britsh nationals have been killed by terrorists abroad in the last 3 years.
"In 1997-98, UK citizens made nearly 47 million visits overseas (9 per cent more than in the previous year and a record). The five-year period 1992-93 to 1997-98 saw a 38 per cent increase in the number of overseas visits, and an even higher increase in demand for consular services. In addition, about 14 million British nationals are resident abroad." - Memorandum submitted by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm199899/cmselect/cmfaff/271/9042803.htm
Approximately 15 people in 100,000 commit suicide in the UK each year (nationmaster.com). Assuming similar statistics for British nationals abroad, at least 1500 British people kill themselves abroad every year, compared with less than 50 deaths caused by terrorists in three years.
Do you think that you could be providing more useful advice to the tax-payers? It almost appears as though you are trying to scare people into not leaving the country, probably boosting those suicide rates even further.
Cheers, Jonty.
One week later the following is posted at the top of the Travel Advice Page:
