THE ENVIRONMENT

Environmental issues are often thought of as only effecting people in the distant future or non-human animals in some distant region of the world.

There are many people living in warmer climates where a rise in temperature directly reduces food production. Niger, one of the hottest countries in the world, is experiencing cyclical droughts attributed to global wraming. As a result 350 000 children suffer from severe malnutrition.

Rising sea-levels are having a signifant effect on low-lying coastal communities. Not only is land being lost by submersion, but the salt content of the soil increases further inland. The Sundarbans in Bangladesh, home to over 2 million people, has halved in size in the last 150 years.
