POLITICS

Our country is democratic for only a few seconds every 4 years.

The ideal political arrangement would be for everyone to have equal power, however, specialisation is required for efficiency and practicality (not everyone can know everything). The purpose of a government is to provide this specialist knowledge of politics and related matters. Therefore, we are looking for somekind of balance between power and specialisation. However, because specialists (politicians) prefer more power, there is a tendancy for the balance to shift. This must be counteracted to prevent corruption. All nations give too much power to too few people.

"In the case of a word like democracy, not only is there no agreed definition, but the attempt to make one is resisted from all sides." - George Orwell 1946 (Meaningless Words)

"People should not fear there governments, governments should fear their people." - V

"What's going to happen?" - Dominic
"What usually happens when people without guns try to stand up to people with guns." - Finch

"If this were a dictatorship, it'd be a heck of a lot easier, just so long as I'm the dictator." - George W. Bush

"A chief must not seek profit for themself." - Cheyenne

"Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around them." - Plato

"Before our white brothers arrived to make us civilized men, we didn't have any kind of prison. Because of this, we had no criminals. Without a prison, there can be no criminals. We had no locks nor keys and therefore among us there were no thieves. When someone was so poor that he couldn't afford a horse, a tent or a blanket, he would, in that case, receive it all as a gift. We were too uncivilized to give great importance to private property. We didn't know any kind of money and consequently, the value of a human being was not determined by his wealth. We had no written laws laid down, no lawyers, no politicians, therefore we were not able to cheat and swindle one another. We were really in bad shape before the white men arrived and I don't know how to explain how we were able to manage without these fundamental things that are so necessary for a civilized society." - John Lame Deer
